New feature in our API: Map support

As of today, our API eats GPX files and HeiaHeia presents them as routes in the feed and in individual entries!

For the lucky ones who don’t speak in three letter acronyms: this means that you can track your outdoor activities with a GPS device & if your tracking app supports HeiaHeia as a destination site, you can automatically push your activities also to HeiaHeia and have nice route thumbnails in your feed to complement your other sporty activities.

The first app supporting this is our friend eCoach, available for the Nokia N900. The feature will be supported in the next eCoach release, due in a couple of weeks.

    Wow. That’s great!

Have you considered collaborating with Sports Tracking Technologies? It would be awesome to have an easy way to sync up exercises. The app supports GPX export but it’s somewhat tedious to extract the data from the phone.

@Juho: We’re basically open to collaboration with anyone and are talking e.g. to several GPS tracking app companies working on various platforms. Nobody has declined co-op with us so far, but different companies have different schedules. A good way for you to speed things up with us and STT would be to send the same “user request” to them also! ; )

Love the feature, but it doesn’t seem to auto zoom on the track I posted,

    http://www.heiaheia.com/user/theLephty

instead by default it’s zoomed out to the global level.

Wow, that is cool! But unfortunately when clicking that map thumbnail, it opens world map, but not my route. Or is it a feature? ;)

    Hello

How about Garmin? I’ve got Garmin 310 XT. I’d like to upload data from that

Great! I could upload my track from eCoach. However, I can not see my trail on any map like in the picture above, whatever I try. A bug maybe?

Would you consider adding a separate sharing control for maps? I’d like to be more open with the times, distances, and durations of my exercises than I am with the location.

Hi, why not let people upload their GPX files via the web interface?

There seems to be a bug when you look at my cycling training (27.6.2010). My cell phone shows the route correct, but after uploading it here it seems, that I have cycled couple of thousend extra kilometres to west.

@Stephen: working on it right now – there’ll be separate privacy settings for map sharing

@Markus Yes, there seems to be an extra point in Atlantic. We’ll check the GPX files that you uploaded and get back to you.

@Olga @Johnny Map zoom level was set incorrectly in some cases – we fixed it, so now you can see your routes without extra clicks.

@Jesús @Mardy Manual upload of GPX files will become possible in the very near future. We’re working on it – be patient :)

Great feature, I’m using it with my N900 every time I go out on a run! But I also run abroad, which means killer roaming prices if I would try to upload it using my phone. This means that I’m also waiting for the possibility to upload my GPX-files using the web interface, can’t wait!

    Keep up the good work!
