A solution for Firefox problems

We have identified one solution for the instability problems with Firefox on Windows. The F-Secure Browsing Protection toolbar is causing Firefox crashing for users of e.g. FarmVille, a lot of other Facebook games, and HeiaHeia.

A quick solution for the problem is to switch off the F-Secure plug-in from the browser, but please make sure that your virus protection is up-to-date also after doing that. For any issues with product security, please consult F-Secure support or e.g. your system administrator.  More info on the problem at the Mozilla Firefox support forum: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/forum/1/651329?s=litmus_ff&as=q

This might not be the only source of instability in the Firefox browser, so please let us know, if it doesn’t help.

Our apologies regarding any frustrations and thanks for your patience with this issue!

Sharing on Facebook and Twitter improved!

A popular request among users has been to “not spam your friends on Facebook or Twitter” by sharing all HeiaHeia entries with them, but instead share only the “meaningful entries”.

We’ve now implemented more granular settings for sharing on other services: You can decide to share only items marked as favourite, share all entries, or share no entries at all (naturally the default). Also, you can state if you want to share your training goals in other services. Sharing your weekly training summary (the one you get on your weekly summary email) is possible on Facebook, we’re working on a solution for Twitter.

Once again, we’d love to hear your comments, improvements & ideas regarding this!

News from H8: Introducing the HeiaHeia API

Welcome to H8, HeiaHeia.com’s brand new developer newsletter!

Joking aside, we’ve just finalized the first version of our API. This will enable that our service will be able to receive data from other relevant applications, services, and devices. A very practical example of this: You’re using a tracking device (like a heart rate monitor), an application (like a GPS app on your phone) or service (like a training log web service) to log e.g. your runs. This data could automatically be pushed to your HeiaHeia account also.

To make the most out of this feature, we have a couple of questions to ask:

1) HeiaHeia users: which tracking devices, apps or services do you use currently? Would you like to get the data in to HeiaHeia?

2) Developers of other tracking devices, apps, or services: would you like to work with us? Just email: heia (at) heiaheia.com! You can take a look at our API documentation here: apiwiki.heiaheia.com, discussions on the API take place here: http://groups.google.com/group/heiaheia-development-talk

A couple of sneak peeks of the first supported apps & devices:

- Nokia N900: we’ve piloted the API with an app called eCoach (http://ecoach.garage.maemo.org/) running on Maemo. Pushing your exercises to HeiaHeia will be supported in the next eCoach release, out in a couple of weeks (more info from here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=16639&page=15).

- Withings scales: we have an eager developer working on getting data from the awesome Withings “internet connected body scales” (www.withings.com) to HeiaHeia. More news to follow.

Firefox problems? Let’s fix them.

EDIT: http://blog.heiaheia.com/2010/05/a-solution-for-firefox-problems/

We’ve been recently experiencing some random crashes with the Firefox browser (version 3.6.3) running on Windows. Mozilla Foundation has been notified about these problems, and they seem to be related to a more generic issue on Firefox, but so far the root cause of the crashes has not been identified on a detailed enough level to fix it.

If you run across this problem, it would be great if you could submit a crash report to Mozilla (by following the instructions of the “Mozilla Crash Reporter”

which appears automatically). If you’d like to help us a bit more, please also send the report ID to us (email: heia(at)heiaheia.com). You can get the report ID by typing “about:crashes” in your browser address bar after restarting it. Besides helping us, you would be contributing to the quality of open source software (the Firefox browser) here, so it’s definitely a valuable thing to do!

In the mean time, if you are suffering from Firefox instabilities, unfortunately the only thing we can do right now is to recommend you to use HeiaHeia on another browser (like IE, Chrome, or Safari – in a random order here ; ) before the FF issues get fixed.

Thanks for your help and sorry for the crashes!

Suomeksi:

Jos haluat auttaa meitä hieman lisää, voisit lisäksi lähettää raportin ID:n meille (osoitteeseen heia(at)heiaheia.com). ID:n saat kirjoittamalla selaimeen “about:crashes” käynnistettyäsi sen uudelleen. HeiaHeian auttamisen lisäksi osallistut avoimen lähdekoodin ohjelmiston (Firefox-selain) laadun parantamiseen, joka on itsessään hieno asia!

Ennen kuin saamme ongelman korjattua, valitettavasti ainoa ratkaisu minkä voimme tarjota, on että käytät HeiaHeiaa toistaiseksi jollain muulla selaimella (kuten Chrome, IE, Safari – lueteltuna satunnaisessa järjestyksessä ; ).

Kiitos avusta ja pahoittelumme ongelmista!

Buddy log

We’re on a roll with new feature releases! Today’s new feature is “Friend log”, a view with all your friends’ training log timelines in one, similar to the group training log. You can find it in the People view of HeiaHeia.

Comments, improvements? Please let us know!

Planning your exercises

When training for an event, people often follow a program (some more strictly, some less strictly ; ). You can now input your program as a training plan in HeiaHeia.

How to use it: make new entries the usual way, but for the future. When these planned events “take place”, you’ll be asked if you want to approve the exercise as planned, if you want to edit & approve it, or if you want to delete it (=it didn’t take place). The approved exercises go into your training diary, the planned entries are kept for a planned vs. actual presentation (we don’t have this yet, but are working on it).

The planned entries are visually represented as gray icons e.g. in the timeline.

Comments & ideas very much welcome, as usual!

A training log for groups

One area in HeiaHeia, which is far from being “ready” is the groups: we have a ton of ideas and requests in our development queue for enriching and improving the current concept.

A key feature requested especially by coaches and teams is a joint training log for a group. We’ve now introduced this in the form of a visual timeline, in which you can browse the activities of group members. The general privacy settings apply also here.

Comments, ideas for further development? Please let us know!

Our mobile site is live!

All good things are worth waiting for – like HeiaHeia on mobile browsers. ; )

A mobile version of the service has been our #1 user request for a while now. We’ve just launched a first take on the topic with a version that supports Nokia S60 devices, the iPhone, Android devices, Opera mobile browsers, Maemo devices, and at least some Nokia S40 native browsers. If you have issues with your device, just let us know and we’ll fix it. Also, all comments on the feature set and usability are more than welcome!

How to use it: just go to HeiaHeia.com with your mobile browser. We’re working on versions to be distributed via various app stores.
